Sustainability was a little foreign to me when I was starting my interior design classes at Georgia Southern. I had definitely heard the "green" campaigns and the three R's, "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle" but I did not realize it's importance in my career choice!
Had I not heard "sustainability" or learned certain aspects of sustainability in each one of my interior design classes, it would be less important to me. Each one of my classes has incorporated its importance and solutions to creating sustainable environments. Yeah, the whole "green" campaign has become more like white noise to the general public, but for this emerging interior design professional it will always remain a priority!
LEED certification has also been something that I have learned about throughout my schooling. I believe that this is the future and that LEED certification will eventually become part of the building codes we already have to follow. I know that it is more costly, but if its helping the planet that we all have to live on, why is it not a priority for everyone?
In my recent job hunting experiences, I have learned that many if not all firms mention something about their sustainable efforts in design or the importance of sustainability in each of their projects. This has definitely sparked my interest in getting my LEED AP to appeal to more firms and to be an active member for sustainable solutions!
Sustainability will remain a priority for me and I hope to encourage others to make it a priority as well!

You should definitely look into taking the test for LEED
ReplyDeleteBeing designers about to enter the field, "green" design has been branded in our brains and that is a good thing because using these new solutions will pay off in the future.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Green solutions will always be a priority for me in design as well.
ReplyDeleteI always knew of tree huggers, but sustainable design definitely does not mean you have to hug a tree. It means providing a space that is valuable to the earth and human well being. My interior design classes taught me a lot about the importance of incorporating sustainable products in everyday life. Everyone in our design program should consider furthering their education and becoming LEED certified.
ReplyDeleteI is becoming more and more important for us as designers to be knowledgeable of what is sustainable and how to create a space that contributes to the world and not just take away from it. The interior design program at Georgia Southern has definitely instilled the importance of applying these ideas and concepts to all of our designs.
